  • 📋Instant Pot Bone Broth

Do you always throw away vegetable scrap?! Just DON’T! Let’s utilize the benefits of WASTE-FREE dining.

Save those onion skins and tip, carrot peels, save the garlic peels, don’t throw away the stalks of herbs – parsley, rosemary, thyme. Just don’t waste those scraps, it’s nutrient-rich and we could use them to make broth out of them.

Instant pot bone broth is warm and comforting. It’s good for you!  You could sip on it anytime you want. On cold days, drinking bone broth is one of the best ways to keep you warm.

Don’t throw away those chicken bones. If you are making a roast chicken and shredded chicken for tacos or other recipes, the leftover bones can be saved for making your version of bone broth. The bone broth pressure cooker is easy, fast and you can make broth in just 2 hours(of course it won’t be as rich as simmering it overnight), but still SO GOOD!

Homemade instant pot bone broth is far tastier than any boxed, canned, or bottled stuff, trust me. Try making your bone broth and you’ll stop buying bone broth forever.

It’s super easy to make plus this recipe calls for all vegetable scraps that you would usually throw away along with leftover chicken bones – either from your Sunday roast or others.

What is bone broth?

Bone broth is made by simmering roasted bones along with connective tissues of animals along with vegetables for a very very long time.

Simmer in a large pot on the stovetop for 12 to 24 hours. Instant pot can also get the job done of making bone broth, and in much less time. The bone broth pressure cooker method takes around 2 hours.  But it may not be as rich as a simmer overnight on the stovetop.

The contents of the broth are drawn from the boiled bones including collagen, bone marrow, amino acids, minerals, and other nutrients. These components are extracted by slow cooking for long hours.

Sometimes acids like vinegar or red wine are added can help loosen and dissolve tougher bits.

Don’t have chicken bones – You any bones you like (turkey necks, beef knees)

Are you a vegetarian? Skip the bones, and use only vegetables.

Bone broth benefits

I won’t be wrong to call bone broth a powerful portion. Some of the health benefits of bone broth are:

  1. Bone broth is nutritional gold mine –

Bone broth is full of amino acids, collagen, animal fat, and a variety of minerals and nutrients.

This powerful portion is low-calorie, high-protein food which provides minerals like magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium. Bone broth helps strengthen bones and reduce joint aches.

  1. Bone broth is natural wrinkle blaster –

Some researchers suggest using collagen supplements may reduce visible signs of aging thus many trust and buy collagen supplements for skin health. Bone broth is a natural source of collagen.

Bone broth is great for your skin. Some call it the “fountain of youth”  a great “Botox alternative”. I may be exaggerating, but what’s important to note is bone broth is great for your skin.

Not just great for skin, it does marvelous things to your nail, teeth, as well as bones!

  1. Bone broth is natural healer –

Sipping on bone broth as it is gives you great relief when you are down with cold. Chicken bone broth soup is a natural healer which can help fight cold and other infections.

All the nutrients in the broth that are released from all the vegetables used to make the broth help boost your immunity system. What fights the infection by strengthening the immunity system is a mix of vegetables not just the bones in the bone broth.

Helps you strengthen your immune system.

Drinking soup made from bone broth is only as nutritious and delicious as it can get. Next time you’re sick or someone in the family is sick, don’t just make soup, make soup with bone broth.

Bone broth soup will not just help you feel better by warming your belly, it also helps you fight cold.

  1. Bone broth improves sleep and reduces anxiety –

Anxiety – your worst enemy. Anxiety leads to sleeplessness and sleeplessness can lead to anxiety. It’s a vicious circle.

For a good night’s sleep, a balanced supply of nutrients like amino acid glutamine is essential. Glutamine is found in abundance in bone broth. Glutamine strengthens intestinal cells, stabilizes the immune system, and helps against stress, depression, and anxiety.

Drinking bone broth means, your giving your body glutamine that has calming effects and counteracts symptoms of stress.

  1. Bone broth heals your gut –

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition in which substances can leak from your intestine into your blood. You can also get a leaky gut after a course of antibiotics. Leaky gut? Drink bone broth to heal it.

The gelatin in bone broth binds with water in the digestive tract, protecting the lining of your intestine.

Step 9 – Store in air tight jars and refrigerate. For longer storage you can freeze broth in ice cube trays and store the frozen broth in zip lock bags.

How to use bone broth?

Drink it up

I enjoy chicken bone broth straight up while it’s still hot. You can drink chicken bone broth while it’s still warm, seasoned with salt and pepper and little lemon juice squeezed into it.

Drinking bone broth instead of green tea is my best way to spend chilly winter evenings.

Soup it

Use bone broth to make soups like chicken noodles soups. You bone broth to even cook the noodles for making chicken noodles soups. So much flavors.

Stews

I love to cook my lentils or any other stew ingredients in homemade chicken bone broth for extra nutrients and flavors. The stew turns out full of flavors.

Use it anywhere

Use chicken bone broth any recipe where you might use store-bought broth.

How to freeze bone broth?

Bone broth stays good in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can store it longer. Just freeze bone broth. To freeze homemade instant pot bone broth, allow the filtered broth to cool completely.

Pour into ice cube trays and place it in the freezer for a couple of hours until completely frozen. Remove the tray from the freezer once the cubes are frozen. Remove the frozen cubes from the tray. Pack it in zip lock bags. Freeze for 3 months.

Common questions

Why Do you Have to Simmer Bone Broth For Very Long Time?

The simple reason why bone broth takes a long time. It takes time for the nutrients and minerals to be extracted from the bones into the broth. So simmering for a longer time helps draw ALL the nutrients and minerals out of the bones. Simmering for long times makes your broth rich.

Is Bone Broth Good For You?

There is no evidence of the advantage of consuming amino acids and minerals from bone broth as opposed to other foods.
Pressure cooker bone broth (or stove top bone broth) made with just bones was found to be a poor source of many nutrients, addition of vegetables increased the content of several important nutrients like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron.
So if you want to benefit from bone broth make a pressure cooker bone broth with loads of vegetables and bones in it.

Can Bone Broth Be Harmful?

There is no solid research done regarding bone broth benefits and its harmful effects. It’s all suggestions based on one’s practice.
Likewise, there is no groundbreaking research on the harmful effects of bone broth either.
However, bone broth may have some potentially harmful effects.
LEAD – is a serious concern in bone broth. Lead and other metals build up in bones and it’s just true to human bones. Even animal bones store heavy metals, particularly lead.
When bones are boiled for a longer time, lead is released from bones into the bone broth. Even if you use organic chicken beef or turkey, there organic bone broth would also have lead in it.
And researches show that lead is a serious concern and can be seriously harmful to humans. When the human body is exposed to lead, there may be adverse effects on almost all organs in the body.
Lead builds up body fat and causes irresponsibility to neurons. It’s dangerous for kids, especially with a risk of behavioral problems like hyperactivity, impaired growth, hearing problems, lower IQ, and anemia.
There is no research for a “safe” level of lead exposure. So we can’t tell you how much lead intake is safe for you.
That means you may want to restrict the amount of consumption of bone broth instant pot.
We do not recommend you to sip it all day long.

I will be getting my chicken bones at the Farmers Market. Should I roast the bones in the oven first before adding them to the instant pot.

I haven’t tried roasting bones, I guess you could roast them before adding to IP. They may be a layer of flavor enhancement.
