You need just a handful of ingredients most of it you probably already have it in your fridge and pantry.

I can’t find whole nutmeg at my grocery stores. Can I substitute it for ground nutmeg, or go without it? Thoughts?! Looking forward to trying this recipe.

You can definitely substitute with ground nutmeg. Homemade ground nutmeg is so much better in terms of flavor and taste, it’s fresh too!

Excited to make this! If doubling the recipe, anything to adjust? Will one whole nutmeg suffice, or do I need to use two?

    Thank you!

For my taste one whole nutmeg was good. Cider was spiced just enough for my taste buds. Please do adjust the spices to YOUR taste preference.

This drink is supposed to be slightly bitter, but wonderful to drink without being overpoweringly bitter.
Did you remove all the whole spices before brewing the drink? Did you use enough sweetener like honey or brown sugar or maple syrup? I would also check if your oranges were good quality.

Hi Jo. I saw this the other day and am dying to try it. Read all the posts here but don’t see my question answered. I have star anise that I bought for another recipe, but so far, have never used it or know what it tastes like. I thought I had everything I needed until I saw whole nutmeg. Not sure I’ve seen that in stores here in Canada. I have the powdered form. Can I use that (if so, how much), or is there a good sub for it? I don’t think the drink would be the same if I left it out. By the way, I’ve never had apple cider either but was going to buy some last week. It’s pretty expensive here and many say homemade is better. Glad I came upon this recipe before buying it.

      Hey Sue
Whole nutmeg you might get it on amazon (canada, I did check it out it’s available on amazon Canada, if you don’t mind buying you can have a look at amazon). If you want to go ahead with nutmeg powder, please use about 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg powder. I removed the whole spices before mashing all fruits, as I wanted just that flavor without over powering. So approximately 1/4 teaspoon would be good for the recipe mentioned
