How to cook hard boil eggs in instant pot
Place 1 cup water into instant pot. Very important.
Place a trivet that comes with the instant pot or use a steamer basket at the bottom of the pot.
Place as many eggs that you can fit in single layer. Just don’t stack eggs one top of the other.
Lock the lid in it’s place and ensure pressure nozzle is it SEALING position.
Press the “Manual” button and set timer for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile fill a medium-size bowl with ice cubes.
NOTE : IP will take time to build pressure inside the pot(about 10 – 15 minutes). Factor this into your cooking time.
After cooking time is complete, the pot will begin the NATURAL RELEASE mode and you will see L0:00 display on panel. This indicates instant pot has begin to release it’s pressure on it’s own.
Wait for instant pot to cool for 5 minutes i.e. NATURAL RELEASE it’s pressure for 5 minutes with display indication – L0:05. Then turn knob to venting position to release all pressure manually.
Open lid, carefully take out trivet with eggs. Plunge eggs into ice bath immediately.
Let eggs cool in ice bath for 5 minutes.
Remove one egg at a time from ice bath, crack it gently. The peel would come off like magic.
Voila – instant pot hard boiled eggs – Perfect!
How do you like your eggs
Ask this question and you may get varied results from people around. If you ask me, my answer wont be the same every day. I prefer my eggs soft, medium and hard boiled on different days, different time, and based on my mood.
If you want to cook hard boiled eggs 5-5-5 is the formula you need to remember.
But if you like soft boiled and medium boiled eggs, then follow this –
Soft set egg whites, runny yolk – 3 minutes cooking time, quick release pressure and cool in ice bath for 1 minute
Medium boiled eggs – firm egg white, jammy yolks – between 4-5 minutes cooking time.
How many eggs at a time can I make in Instant Pot
Well, you can really fill up the instant pot with dozen of eggs and cook it at a time. What I noticed is filling as much egg as you can in one single layer ensure every single egg is perfectly cooked. Stacking too many eggs one on top of another might give you varied results. Some eggs might have perfect golden yellow yolks and some might not. So I recommend you to cook only as many eggs that fits in one layer.
The size of the eggs differs from place to place. Some places you get eggs that are really small and in some other places you get giant eggs. So I can’t give you exact number of eggs you can cook at a time in IP. Just remember – one layer of eggs in instant pot.
How to easily peel hard boiled eggs
Instant pot hard boiled eggs are easier to peel than traditional hard boiled eggs.
5 minutes high pressure cooking time
5 minutes Natural Release
5 minutes in ice bath
The 5-5-5 magic formula works, it does!
Once cooked eggs are cooled in ice bath for 5 minutes, simply remove an egg, gently crack them open by rolling on kitchen counter for 2-3 times.
See how effortlessly the peel comes off when you pull the egg shells. And it peel neat and clean, no egg whites with shells.
How to store hard boiled eggs
You can store peeled hard boiled eggs I for about a week in the fridge. Place eggs in sealed container and secure the lid tight.
You could also fill up little water in the box in which you are storing the eggs and place eggs immersed in water. Store refrigerated. But you may want to change the water every day.

Tips for PERFECT Hard Boiled Eggs
- Oldest Egg – Use a week or 10 days old eggs if you want hard boiled eggs. Fresh eggs are going to be hard to peel and you definitely don’t want that frustration upon you.
- The cooking time for white and brown eggs remains the same.
- Once cooking time is done, let the instant pot cool down slowly on it’s own for 5 minutes (Natural Release). You will get indication of L0:05. Then immediately switch the toggle to venting position (Manual pressure release). Set a timer for 5 minutes soon as cooking time is complete and Instant Pot beeps indicating the same. If you let the eggs sit in instant pot for longer (longer natural release), it’s going to continue to cook and you may not get perfect hard boiled eggs.
- Ice bath – very important to plunge the eggs in ice bath soon as you release pressure and open the lid. Keep a bowl filled with ice ready near the pot, so you can plunge the eggs immediately. The faster the eggs cool down, it’s going to stop cooking. Which is very important if you don’t want ugly green ring around egg yolk. Allowing eggs sit in ice bath for 5 minutes helps in super easy peeling of the egg shell.
- Remove eggs from ice bath after 5 minutes (yes you need to time it for 5 minutes) , peel off the shell like magic. Didn’t I tell it’s easier to peel!

These look seriously perfect! I make them in my IP every week and usually do 4-4-4, but I’m loving the way these look. The IP makes it SOO much easier! And I totally agree that older eggs are so much better!!
