3. A blender and 5 minutes on the timer is all you need to whip up this refreshing drink.

5. It’s creamy, frothy, citrusy sweet and refreshing!

Ingredients

all ingredients for orange Julius recipe
  1. Orange juice concentrate isn’t same as orange juice.  Use frozen canned concentrate, orange juice won’t add as strong flavor. Highly recommend you use frozen orange juice concentrate.
  2. The secret ingredient in the recipe that adds fluffy/foamy, smooth texture to the drink is a small amount of powdered sugar. Granulated sugar may result in grainy texture in the drink. Powdered sugar makes the drink creamy and fluffy.
  3. Highly recommend you use whole milk for orange Julius recipe. The fat in the milk will add essential creaminess to the drink.
  4. Orange zest is optional, I highly recommended. It enhances the orange flavor in orange Julius recipe.

Is It Mandatory To Use Egg whites in The Recipe?

Traditional orange Julius recipe calls for egg white (or egg white powder) to get the right foaminess. Egg whites are added for creating rich and creamy texture in the beverage with right amount of foaminess.

I skipped egg white. The idea of eating raw egg whites and the risk of contracting salmonella made me decide to skip egg whites. Egg white powder is not available near me.

Trust me, even without egg whites the beverage is just like you’d expect. Creamy, slightly fluffy (thanks to powdered sugar) and tangy-sweet, everything you want in your orange Julius recipe.

Orange Julius Variations

There are limitless flavor variations you can try. Use any frozen fruits like frozen banana, frozen strawberries, frozen pineapple chunks or frozen mango.  Try adding other berries like raspberries, blueberries.

  • Orange Julius Smoothie with Banana – use frozen banana to make thicker, creamier smoothie.
  • Orange-Strawberry Julius – Add frozen strawberries to the regular orange Julius recipe.
  • Orange-Pineapple Julius – a perfect summer drink of copycat orange Julius recipe with frozen pineapple chunks.
  • Vegan Orange Julius – replace diary milk with diary-free milk like almond milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fresh orange juice?

Frozen orange juice concentrate works the best. If  fresh orange juice is used instead of orange juice concentrate the flavors won’t be as strong (will be less orange-y flavor and taste) and the texture of the drink will be slightly different.
If you want to use fresh orange juice, freeze fresh squeezed orange juice in ice tray first before blending. Please skip adding any water to the blender if using fresh orange juice.

Can I use regular/granular sugar to make orange Julius?

The secret ingredient in the recipe that adds fluffy/foamy, smooth texture to the drink is a small amount of powdered sugar. Granulated sugar may result in grainy texture in the drink. Powdered sugar makes the drink creamy and fluffy.

Can I make a big batch and store it for later?

Orange Julius tastes best right off the blender. You can however store it refrigerated for a day but I won’t recommend freezing it for longer storage.
As the beverage rest in refrigerator, it will tend to thin down, loosen it’s foaminess and you will begin to see two separating layers, water at the bottom and orange layer on top.

I once made a drink of orange juice( I don’t remember if I used fresh or concentrated)
and just an egg yoke. I tasted very much like an original Orange Julius.

My food philosophy is simple, fresh and full of flavors! I love ‘spicy’ food. In fact so much so that I can skip dessert for extra spicy savory food!
