Most watermelon granita recipe would use 3 basic ingredients – watermelon, sweetner and lemon juice. We are giving a small twist to the regular granita and making it fresh and flavorful.
The secret ingredient – Mint Leaves!
Don’t just use mint leaves for garnish, it’s so flavorful that you need to take total advantage of it. The result – fresh, vibrant, gorgeous watermelon granita with amazing flavors of mint in it. Doesn’t that sound super exciting! We loved it. Trust me, you’ll love it!
Ingredients Needed For Watermelon Granita Recipe
This is not your average watermelon granita recipe. The secret ingredient that makes the best granita ever, is fresh mint leaves.
Here’s what you’ll need-
- Fresh watermelon cubes (or) frozen watermelon cubes
- Sweetener – sugar, sugar syrup, honey or stevia
- Lime Juice
- Fresh Mint Leaves
I did not bother to remove seeds from watermelon, as fresh watermelon juice will be passes through fine mesh strainer. Best use seedless watermelon or remove the seeds from watermelon before you go ahead. If you have frozen fruits in your freezer, granitas is the way to use up all those fruits.
How To Make Granita (Step-By-Step Photos)
Here’s how you make fresh, flavorful, tasty, low calorie summer treat:
- Simple way to cut watermelon into cubes – first cut watermelon into discs.
- Remove the outer green rind. Having square block of watermelon makes it easy to cut them into cubes. Cut watermelon length-wise and then cut crosswise to make square cubes of watermelon.
- You can use watermelon cubes as it is or freeze it and use it as frozen watermelon granita. Add watermelon cubes into food processor or blender.
- Pulse it a couple of times to make it into juice.
- Now add sweetener like sugar, or sugar syrup, stevia or even honey.
- Add lime juice. Lime juice brings out the sweetness of watermelon and taste better.
- Add fresh mint leaves.
- Mint leaves adds amazing fresh flavors to granita. This step is option, but you’ll love the flavors of mint leaves in granita, trust me.
10.Blend everything together until everything blends together well. Filter out watermelon juice into and pour into shallow dish.
11. Now set it in freezer for couple of hours. Once set a bit, remove it from freezer and scrape it well. Place it back in freezer to set again. Repeat this couple of times to make the consistency better.
12. Once it fully sets scrape it and break it down well.
13. Scoop it and serve it immediately garnished with mint leaves.

I have never heard of Granitas before. Where I grew up in the Bronx, they sold piraguas (what we called them) that look just like this.
