Frozen watermelon smoothie is perfect summer smoothie that takes only like a minute in the blender! It’s that easy and so refreshing, definitely one of the BEST and healthiest drink this summer!
There can’t be anyone in the world who doesn’t love watermelon. This juicy, sweet, refreshing summer fruit is best during summer. Eat it as it is, or turn it into your favorite summertime treat like – granita, smoothie, sorbet, slushie, you’ll love them all.
Feasting on watermelon on hot summer day makes you feel good about eating it. And you can eat it as much as you want without worrying about your waist-line!
Few days back we posted very refreshing and cooling watermelon grantia recipe. We promised that there will be more watermelon recipes coming up on the blog. Because it summer (or almost summer) and we will be eating a whole LOTS OF WATERMELON!
Eat watermelon just as it is, the best thing ever, right? I love to sit on my porch and have a big slice of watermelon, biting into it. Fun isn’t it!
Summer always yields the best bright red, juiciest, sweetest watermelons ever! And making watermelon smoothie from that freshest watermelon is perfect fit during summer.
Are you one of those who absolutely love watermelons but haven’t given watermelon smoothie recipe a try?
Well, it’s time you do try it now. It’s really easy to make like any other smoothie and it’s perfect summertime smoothie.
You can make this watermelon smoothie with fresh watermelon or freeze them for few hours and blend into smoothie. Freezing only helps with the consistency of the smoothie.
I personally prefer my smoothie to be always made from frozen fruits. I ALWAYS want to have my smoothie nice, thick, creamy consistency.
If you are just like me, if you are after thick smoothie use frozen fruits.
This summery light, refreshing, cool smoothie is perfect for summer morning or as snack. It’s so simple to make, refreshing and satisfying.
We did add a few tablespoons of chilled milk in the smoothie(not shown in video) to not just blend into smooth creamy smoothie, but also helps break down the frozen fruits in the blender.
Feel free to add just ice cubes or chilled water, Greek yogurt or just milk to the watermelon smoothie recipe. If you are concerned about the taste of this smoothie along with diary like yogurt or milk, add chilled water.
As strange as it might sound, diary did work well with watermelon. Like watermelon and cheese(feta) is a winning combination, milk or yogurt too would work well.
Initially I was skeptical too about adding milk to watermelon smoothie. I wasn’t sure if the taste will be good! And I’m glad I added milk to the smoothie. Frozen watermelon, frozen strawberries, milk blend well together and it made one tasty watermelon smoothie.
So don’t be afraid to add in yogurt in case you want to add it.

Best Blender To Use
Smoothie is all about blending frozen fruit. If you are a smoothie person you know very well that a good blender is very important to make good smooth creamy smoothie. I’ve gone through a share of my blender trying to make smoothies and most of it did fail, with bits and pieces of frozen fruits in my smoothie. I hate it. I recommend *Ninja Professional Blender. This one blends ice too, yay!
How To Make Watermelon Smoothie
Frozen Fruits –
It all starts with fresh ripe watermelon. Buy fresh ripe watermelon preferably without seeds. If watermelon got seeds in it, make sure to remove all seeds before you start blending into smoothie.
I prefer to cut watermelon into discs, then cut out the outer green rind leaving behind ripe watermelon squares. Cut the squares into 1 inch cubes. Remove any seeds present on watermelon.
Store the cubes in zip lack bags and freeze it.
Pro-Tip – definitely use frozen fruits for thick smoothie consistency.
I prefer to use 1.5:1 ratio of frozen watermelon to frozen strawberries. For every 1.5 cups of frozen watermelon, use 1 cup frozen strawberries.
Taste Enhancers –
Lime juice in watermelon makes it taste much better. Lime juice also adds hint of tart kick to the smoothie balancing out the sweetness of the watermelon.
We call for honey in this smoothie recipe for sweetness enhancement. In place of honey you can add stevia, sugar. DO NOT ADD ANY SWEETENER if your watermelon has enough sweetness to it.
Packing In Nutrients –
Few teaspoons of chia seeds in the smoothie packs more nutrients in the smoothie. You can either replace chia seeds with flax seeds, hemp or add these along with chia.
Liquids –
To add or not to add liquids will majorly depend on your blender and ofcourse your taste buds. Since we are using frozen fruits, your blender should be powerful enough to break down frozen fruits and make a smooth, thick smoothie.
Frozen fruits when blended is more like slushie consistency. I love to drink it up with straw directly. So good!
If you prefer to add liquids, choose one of the below –
Ice cubes
Chilled water
Chilled milk
Chilled almond milk (for vegan option).
Note – If using fresh watermelon (not frozen) do not add any liquids. It will thin down the smoothie consistency.
Serve It Right Away –
Always serve smoothie right away. This watermelon smoothie made from frozen fruits will have slushie like consistency when served immediately. The longer you wait, the icy parts starts separating and float to the top leaving down the juice sink down the glass.
Smoothie tastes better when served chilled.
