Ingredients
Here’s what you’ll need to make the best s’mores dip recipe-
- Butter
- Hershey’s chocolate or chocolate chips (meltable)
- Marshmallows
- Crackers
All ingredient’s exact measurements are mentioned in the recipe card below.
- Butter – for greasing the cast iron skillet. Fat helps chocolate melt silky smooth.
- Chocolate – use Hershey’s chocolate or good quality meltable chocolate chips. I used a mix of both dark and milk Hershey’s bar. You may use just one type.
- Marshmallows – use large marshmallows. Depending on the height of the cast iron pan you can snip the marshmallow into half. Feel free to use mini marshmallows if you don’t have large marshmallows.
- Crackers – s’more dip is incomplete without crackers for dipping. Graham crackers are the most common choice of crackers to serve with the dip, you may also use wafers, or pretzels for dipping. Fresh strawberries can also be served for dipping.
How to make it
Making a dip can’t get easier than this.
Grease cast iron skillet with butter.
Arrange Hershey’s chocolate into an even layer at the bottom.
Place marshmallows on top, covering the chocolate layer.
Bake in preheated oven at 400F for 5-7 minutes, depending on how toasty you like the marshmallows to be.
Keep an eye on marshmallows, as toast quickly. Even a few extra seconds in the oven will turn marshmallows from toasted to burnt!
Serve the dip hot with crackers, wafer cookies, pretzels, or fresh strawberries for dipping.
What to serve with s’mores dip?
Gather family and friends around and serve the dip straight off the cast iron skillet with your favorite dippers on the side for each to choose.
There are so many other dipper options! The obvious choice is the classic, graham crackers. Not just the crackers, you can dip so many other things in it like fresh strawberries, pretzels, Nutter butter, green apple slices, orange wedges, chocolate chip cookies, pirouettes wafers and so much more.
Useful tips
- Use a cast iron dish. A cast iron pan is best as it retains the heat. You can use a mini cast iron pan instead of 9-inch skillet. I used a mini cast iron pan and reduced the recipe by half, it was cute to present in mini skillets.
- Use quality chocolate. Use good quality chocolate that melts into a silky-smooth dip. Good old Hershey’s Bar never disappoints. However, any meltable chocolate will do. Traditional chocolate bar that is used for baking, and chocolate chips work great too.
- Even layer of chocolate. If using a chocolate Bar like Hershey’s make sure to use an even layer of chocolate. Piling up chocolate bars might result in uneven melting of chocolate.
- Butter helps. Fat helps keep chocolate silky-smooth and not harden up fast. Greasing the pan with fat like butter or coconut oil keeps melted chocolate smooth and silky.
- Cut marshmallows if needed depending on the height of the skillet pan. Cutting marshmallows into half using kitchen scissors keeps marshmallows from puffing way too much.
- Bake not broil. Unless you want a toastier finish on marshmallows.
Variations
S’mores dip recipe is very versatile. You can make many variations of it according to the availability of ingredients and your taste preference.
- Swirl in some peanut butter over chocolate
- Use different types of Hershey’s Bars like Hershey’s cookies and cream bar
- Instead of a dark chocolate bar use a white chocolate bar
- Use Reese’s peanut butter cups
- Chocolate syrup may be used instead of chocolate bar
- Mini marshmallows may be used
- Drizzle salted caramel over the top once it’s out of oven
- For a crunchy bite, make graham cracker crumble and sprinkle over the chocolate before layering it up with marshmallows
- Mix up the chocolate by combining milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, toffee bites.
There are so many choices.

Yes, absolutely. You can use a baking dish or a pie dish.
If using a glass baking dish, make sure to lower the temperature to 350F to prevent the glass dish from breaking.
Yes, you can. Mini marshmallows melt faster, you will have to reduce the baking time and keep an eye on it.
I don’t recommend storing this dip in the refrigerator. Chocolate and toasted marshmallows when chilled will get hard, and reheating will make marshmallows lose their toasted ooey gooey texture.
If you do want to store it as you may have leftovers (which is unlikely), you need to cool completely, cover and store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Although you can use the microwave, you must remember microwaves will not toast marshmallows they will only soften them making them gooey and melty. Using a microwave microwave-safe bowl, first, melt chocolate in the microwave using 50% powder for 20-second intervals until smooth. Add marshmallows and microwave again until they start to puff up.
