What You’ll Need To Make Chocolate Hummus?
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 3 ½ tablespoon dutch cocoa powder
- ⅓ cup almond butter or peanut butter
- ½ cup maple syrup or honey or coconut sugar
- 2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup chocolate chips
Ingredients Additions & Substitutions
For different flavors:-
- Use peppermint or almond extract if you like to give it different flavors. Mint chocolate hummus is wonderful!
- Add some shredded or desiccated coconut to the hummus.
- Blend extract chocolate chips to make it richer. Also to give it Mexican flavors you can add Mexican chocolate and a pinch of cayenne pepper while blending.
Chickpeas – If making your own chickpeas used 1 ¼ cups cooked chickpeas. Here’s a useful post to make your own chickpeas, it’s much better and cheaper than buying canned chickpeas.
In place of chickpeas you can use black beans or northern beans.
Cocoa Powder – Use dark unsweetened cocoa powder to get rich tasting brownie batter hummus.
Almond Butter – Can use any nut butter. Peanut butter or almond butter or cashew butter – all of these will work. I used homemade almond butter for making dessert hummus. Use store bought or make your own butter my simply blending roasted nut until it’s in spreadable consistency.
Sweetener – Maple syrup or honey or coconut sugar can be used. To keep it healthy stay away from refined sugar.
Vanilla Extract & Salt – To enhance flavor and taste of chocolate hummus.
Chocolate Chips – For extra dose of chocolatey-ness! You can blend some into the chocolate hummus and sprinkle some of top.
Almond Milk – Not shown in photo. To make hummus blend smooth you will have to add little liquid while blending. Almond milk is best. You can also add water to help blend into smooth hummus.
How To Make Dessert Hummus?

If using canned chickpeas, drain chickpeas and rinse it well before you use.
You’ll need a powerful blender to make dessert hummus. I experimented with both food processor and a blender. I found blender works better for me in terms of making my chocolate hummus smooth.
Food processor will work too, but I found it results in bit grainy hummus even after blending it for 25 minutes! Maybe my food processor isn’t powerful enough or whatever the reason.
If you have VITAMIX, without any thought just use that to make brownie batter hummus.
Here’s how you make dessert hummus-
Rinse canned chickpeas and drain it completely.
Add chickpeas, cocoa powder, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract, salt into blender or food processor.
Blend.
It will be hard to blend chocolate hummus without any liquid. Add 2 to 3 tablespoon (add more as needed) almond milk or water to help blend into smooth hummus.
Blend until smooth.

Serve it with fruits, cracker for dipping. Or spread it on toast, pancakes, waffle and enjoy!
What To Serve With Chocolate Hummus?
Chocolate hummus is best served as dessert platter with fruits, berries and crackers on side for dipping.
As dip:-
- Fruits that you can dip in dessert hummus– banana, sliced apple, orange slices, clementine’s
- Berries to dip – strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries
- Dried Fruits – dried apricot, dried fig, dried apple chips
- Crackers – graham crackers or saltines or regular crackers
- Pretzels
- Nuts
As spread:-
Use dessert hummus as spread for toast, pancakes and waffles.
Mix chocolate hummus into overnight oats or chia pudding.
We simply love to eat it straight from the bowl with a spoon.

Can I Use Other Beans?
Yes chocolate hummus can be made using any of these – chickpeas, black beans, northern beans, cannellini beans.
How To Cook My Own Chickpeas At Home?
It’s really very simple to make your own chickpeas at home. If you have pressure cooker or instant pot it’s really a breeze! You don’t even have to soak chickpeas, use directly dried beans.

If you don’t have instant pot, you can use stove top method.
To cook dried beans, simply add the beans into a large pot of boiling water. Note time to cook will vary.
You’ll need approximately 45 to 75 minutes to cook chickpeas on stove top. Note – you’ll need loads of water to cook chickpeas as it will be cooking for longer time.
Is Chocolate Hummus Healthy?
Chocolate hummus is healthier than Nutella or other chocolate spread found in the market. Chocolate hummus main ingredients is chickpeas, which has truck load of fiber and protein.
How To Store Dessert Hummus?
Dessert hummus can be stored in air tight container for a week in refrigerator.
Does Brownie Batter Hummus Freeze Well?
I haven’t tried freezing as every time I make it, it flies pretty fast. Max of two days is what it has stuck around in my house even when I make big batch.
My guess about freezing – yes it can be stored in freezer for longer storage.
I would however recommend you store in smaller portions so you can take out just enough for serving. Thaw frozen dessert hummus overnight in the fridge and serve it the next day.
