Why does this recipe work?
- Authentic guacamole recipe uses all fresh ingredients without any fillers like sour cream, mayonnaise, cheese, or yogurt.
- An authentic guacamole recipe is usually made by mashing avocado in a mortar and pestle. If you don’t have a mortar and pestle, you can get it done with just a bowl and fork.
- This recipe is extremely forgiving. If you like super creamy guac dip, mash ripe avocados well, if you like chunky dip, mash lightly to have chunky bits.
- For spicy dip, add jalapenos (with seeds on). For extra crunch, add red onions and ripe tomatoes to the dip.
- A great party dip that’s perfect to feed large crowds or gatherings.
- The dip is best with nacho chips. You can also spread it on your tacos, burritos, or a sandwich.
Guacamole Ingredients
- Avocado – use ripe mashable avocados.
- Lime juice – is very important in the recipe to keep the avocado from turning brown. It also adds a sour, tangy flavor.
- Red onion and garlic – add flavor and aroma to the dip. It also adds texture to each bite.
- Ripe tomato – tomato is not commonly added to the dip in Mexico. Chop the tomato into half remove the watery center with seeds and then dice into small cubes.
- Cilantro – it is a must!
- Jalapeno – adds a kick. For mild heat, remove and discard the seed.
Flavor variations
There are plenty of flavor variations. Some suggestions –
- Cumin – add a pinch of ground cumin for earthy flavor.
- Use chives as a cilantro substitute if you aren’t a fan.
- Keep the dip chunky or smooth, just like the way you like.
- Some even like to add fillers like sour cream or cream cheese to their guac dip. Do remember that adding it may dilute the dip.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Cut perfectly ripe avocados into half lengthwise. Remove and discard the pit. Using a spoon scoop out the flesh, and add it to a large mixing bowl. Squeeze fresh lime juice over it.
Step 2: Add a generous pinch of sea salt to the avocado, this will prevent the avocado from oxidizing and turning brown.
Step 3: Using a fork mash avocado. Do not over-mash or puree avocados. It needs to have some texture.
Step 4: Add the remaining ingredients diced red onions, minced garlic, diced tomatoes, chopped jalapenos, and fresh cilantro. Mix until combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as required. If you like extra punch add more jalapenos.
It’s BEST to serve guacamole as soon as it’s made. These are great with nachos or tortilla chips.
Ways to serve
Serve this easy guacamole recipe with tortilla chips or nachos. It’s the best way to eat!
Other ways to serve –
- With burritos or burrito bowls.
- Spoon it over a bowl of taco soup.
- Spread over toasted bread to make pesto eggs on avocado toast.

Tips

- Do not over-mash or puree avocados.
- Use freshly squeezed lime.
- If you don’t like raw garlic flavor, skip it. Adding ripe tomatoes is optional too.
- For extra spicy, add one more jalapeno with seeds on.
How to stop guacamole from going brown?
It’s natural for the avocado to turn brown when it comes in contact with air.
To keep guacamole fresh and green add a thin layer of water on top of guacamole. Transfer guacamole into an air-tight glass container. Pack it tight, pressuring out any air bubbles. Pour a thin layer of water gently over the surface without disturbing the surface of guacamole. Make sure to cover the entire surface. Cover tight and store in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
It may sound peculiar but trust me, water does not alter the texture and you won’t have to deal with extensively sour guacamole with the extra lime juice method. The layer of water covering the top acts as a barrier against oxygen.
When ready to eat, remove the lid, and gently pour out the water. Give it a swift stir and serve.
Recipe FAQs
To see if avocado is ripe, gently press on one end, it should have a little bit of give to it. But it shouldn’t be too soft and mushy.
If it doesn’t yield at all, then it’s not ripe and ready. If it doesn’t yield, give it a couple of days.
Thumb rule to picking the right avocado is –
Still has the stem on,
Should slightly yield to it,
Should be firm and not mushy.
Homemade guac is one of the fastest-expiring dishes. While it’s always best to serve it immediately after you make it, if you wish to store it can only last for max 2 to 3 days in the refrigerator if stored correctly(please read the section on How to stop guacamole from going brown?)

I’ve always wondered how to keep guacamole from turning brown before serving, and I’m quite intrigued by your water method. I think I’ll have to give it a try the next time I make guac ( which will likely be this week, as I’ve got a bag of avocados sitting on my table right now).
