Ingredients needed
All you need for a great dip that can be made in under 5 minutes is shown below. Don’t skip the notes below.
All ingredients exact measurements are mentioned in recipe card below.
Avocados – pick firm, ripe avocados for best results. I used a locally grown avocado variety here.
Jalapeños – since I could not get my hands on jalapenos, I used serrano peppers as substitute.
Cilantro – if you hate cilantro, you can substitute it with parsley or green onions in the recipe. I highly recommend cilantro for this dip. It gives that amazing flavor and taste which I LOVE. I know that’s true!
Lemon Juice – use only freshly squeezed lemon juice.
How to make creamy avocado dip
How to choose the right avocado?
Picking the right avocado is crucial in making this dip. Pick the ones that are ripe but still firm. If the skin of the avocado is dark, almost black. You’ll know if it’s ripe if it yields when you gently press on it. Don’t use over-ripe avocados or under-ripe avocados.
Start by cutting the ripe avocado in half. Discard seed. Scoop out the avocado flesh. Add it to the processor.
Add the rest of the ingredients garlic, jalapeños, lemon juice, salt, cumin powder, sour cream, and loads of fresh cilantro leaves. Tender stem of cilantro can be used as well, it’s full of flavors.
Blend until smooth. Note I did not have to add any water.
Transfer creamy avocado dip into serving bowls. Serve it as an appetizer dip for fresh-cut veggies or chips or nachos or spread it on sandwiches, or drizzle it over salads.
Tips for success
- Choose the right ripe avocado for the dip. It makes all the difference. Flavor and the taste come from avocado.
- Use this dip as soon as it’s made. This dip tastes great when served fresh. If you let it sit it’ll turn brown.
- It takes 5 minutes to make this dip, recommend you make it fresh all the time.
- Use freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- Can’t stand cilantro? You can substitute it with parsley or green onions. Let me tell you the flavor and taste might not be exactly the same, but it works.
- You can keep it chunky or make it smooth depending on your preference. To keep it chunky cut jalapeno, and cilantro using a knife as fine as you can, then mash everything with avocado using a fork or wooden spatula.
- If you like spicy, generously sprinkle cayenne pepper. You can also increase the jalapeños in the recipe to add heat.
Storage
When avocadoes are exposed to air it will turn brown due to oxidation. It’s best to use this dip soon as it’s made. If you have leftovers and prefer to store them, I recommend to transfer to an airtight container. Just storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator won’t be enough to keep this dip from turning brown. To retain some of its vibrant green colors, do this-
- even the top of the dip. Pour a thin layer of olive oil ensuring the dip is fully covered below the oil, secure the lid tight and store in the refrigerator.
- some even swear one the technique of placing a thick slice of onion on top. Note I haven’t tested this technique yet, it’s just a suggestion.
