Ingredients
Ingredients notes
- Watermelon – Use ripe seedless watermelon. If you can’t get seedless watermelon, use regular watermelon and try removing most of the seeds that you can. Don’t bother removing every seed. Blend and strain in a fine mesh sieve, that’ll do.
- Tequila – Blanco tequila or 100% agave silver tequila is best to use.
- Lime juice – use freshly squeezed lime juice. Along with lime juice, you could also include triple sec or orange juice for a flavorful drink.
- Sweetener (optional, add only if needed) – you can use agave nectar, honey, or refined sugar.
- Jalapenos – add a spicy kick to a margarita. Slice jalapenos and add it to the drink. The longer the jalapeno slices soak in the drink, the spicier the drink will turn. Leave jalapenos in the margarita depending on how spicy you like your margarita.
- To rim margarita glasses – use ancho chili powder or regular chili powder mixed with salt. This is optional, I highly recommend you don’t skip it. Wet the rim of the margarita glass by rubbing it with a lime wedge and then dip the rim in the chili-salt mix.
- Garnish – use jalapeno slices and lime wedges.
All the ingredients exact measurements is mentioned in the recipe card below.
How to make it
Ideally seedless watermelon works best. If you can’t get seedless watermelon, use regular watermelon and try removing most of the seeds that you can. Don’t bother removing every seed.
Step 1: Cut out the rind from the watermelon. Chop the fruit into 1-inch cubes.
Step 2: add watermelon to a blender.
Step 3: Blend to get the juice.
Step 4: Strain watermelon juice in a fine mesh sieve.
Pour watermelon juice. Add lime juice, tequila, honey, a few jalapeno slices, and ice cubes into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.
Serve watermelon margarita in glasses coated with salt and chili powder rim.
Many opt for sugar coating on margarita glasses. I’m biased when it comes to margaritas. I need to have the salt rim. And this watermelon cocktail needs something little extra than plain salt. It needs the kick. After all, it’s watermelon jalapenos margarita remember?! It’s got to have the kick. So chili powder mixed with sea salt (crushed) is the best way to serve this summer margarita.
How to make watermelon margarita without cocktail shaker
Some of us don’t own a cocktail shaker! That’s right, I confess, I still don’t own a cocktail shaker! But that doesn’t stop me from making homemade margaritas and enjoying them, especially during summer.
So if you are someone like me who doesn’t own a cocktail shaker, we got you covered.
- Go-to coffee mugs: You heard it right! Those spill-proof go-to coffee mugs can be used instead of cocktail shakers. The small hole through which you sip coffee can be used to pour shaken cocktails without the need for a strainer.
- Mason jar: Oh yes, mason jars are wonder jars. Not just used for storage, but you can also shake your cocktail with it. Close the jar tightly with the lid and shake the cocktail. Pour into glasses through a strainer.
- Protein shaker / sports bottle : You need to have leak proof bottles to shake cocktails.
- Two cups : Age old method used by many to shake cocktail without cocktail shaker is two cups method. Two cups one should be slightly smaller than the other. Pour cocktail into one cup, place it on counter. Place the other cup upside down into the cup, this will form a seal between cups. Shake well. Tilt top cup about 5-10 degrees to the side to break the seal. Pour cocktail into the glasses and serve.
Best tequila to use for margarita
It’s not margarita if there is no tequila in the drink. Some may wonder what is the best tequila to use to make margaritas!
The answer is you need to grab a BLANCO TEQUILA. It’s un-aged, mellowed-out. It’s got the purest flavor thus complementing the flavors in margarita.
Best tips
- Always keep tequila in the fridge, so the margarita is chill when you make the drink.
- No metal or plastic please. Glass pitcher is best to keep, store and serve watermelon margarita.
- Add ice only before serving. Once ice cubes is added, serve immediately.
- Salted rim glasses are must for margaritas. It’s no fun to drink margarita without salted (and chili mix) rim. If your feeling creative try other fun flavored salts on the rim.
