Why you’ll love this holiday treat

  1. Last minute treats – Everybody, I mean everybody needs to have a go-to recipe for holiday treats! No matter how well and advance you plan, there always (mostly) comes a time when you feel you have so much to do this holiday season or for a party and you want to have at least one treat that can give you a breather.  These pretzels are great last-minute treats.
  2. Customizable – You can use any pretzel of your choice and there are many ways you can flavor it. Dip it in white chocolate, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, or even caramel. Sprinkle with holiday sprinkles, toasted and crushed almonds or peanuts, candy sugar, and crushed peppermint candy. Customize it for different occasions like Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween, or Easter.
  3. Minimal ingredients – You probably have all the ingredients needed in your pantry. If not, it’s the holiday season, stock up your pantry with those chocolate melts and sprinkles. Use pretzel twists or rods, dip in melted chocolate, and go crazy with the sprinkles! That’s it!
  4. Minimal effort – What could be easier than chocolate-covered pretzel rods or twists? Melt, dip, sprinkle, and set it to set. That’s all. A small batch of it will take about 10 minutes of effort, most of it is the fun task of dipping pretzels in melted chocolate and sprinkling with your favorite topping.
  5. Make ahead – These are great make-ahead holiday gifts. You can store these in air-tight boxes for 2 weeks.  Once the chocolate sets and hardens, these dark or white chocolate pretzels can be boxed for gifts, arranged in glass jars, and served at cocktail parties.
  6. Great for holiday gifting purposes!

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need –

  • Pretzels
  • Candy coating
  • Sprinkles

All the ingredients’ exact measurements are mentioned in the recipe card below.

ingredients for chocolate covered pretzels

Ingredients Notes:

  • Pretzels: both mini pretzel twists and pretzel sticks can be used. If you have pretzels snaps that works too.
  • Chocolate for coating: you can use any melting chocolate you have. Chocolate bars (used for baking), candy melts, or chocolate chips all work. I used dark chocolate and white chocolate bars, melted in the microwave until fully melted and smooth to dip pretzels. Depending on the type of celebration you can change the color of candy melt to suit the celebrations.
  • Sprinkle: feel free to use any type of sprinkles or jimmies you have. You can also use crushed nuts, crushed candies, and colored sugar crystals for decoration.

How to make

Step 1:Line up a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. This ensures pretzels dipped in chocolate do not stick as they dry. And it’s easier to remove dipped pretzels without breaking them.

Step 2: Melt white and dark chocolate in separate bowls in the microwave at 30 seconds intervals.  Stir every time you remove chocolate from the microwave to help melt evenly and smooth.  Chocolate candy melts are best to use, it melts smooth and is easy to work with it.

Instead of candy melts, you can use choco chips or other melting chocolate.

Dip pretzels one at a time. Remove dipped pretzels from the chocolate using a fork. Shake off excess chocolate from pretzels and place it on a tray lined with baking sheet.

Step 3: For pretzel rods (or pretzel sticks): use microwave-safe tall glass to melt chocolate in the microwave. Dip the pretzel rod halfway into the melted chocolate. Twist the rod to coat evenly.

Step 4: Shake off excess chocolate and lay it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 6: Sprinkle topping: sprinkle the topping over dipped pretzels immediately. Sprinkles will stick to pretzels while it’s wet. You want to work fast here.

Pro-Tip: sprinkle the topping, don’t dip it in the bowl of sprinkles. Wet chocolate will mess it up.

Step 7:Allow pretzels to rest until the chocolate coating is completely set. You can allow it to set at room temperature or pop in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or until set.

Step 8: For gifting pack it in cute boxes or gift bags. Once set store in air-tight containers. It will keep for a little more than 2 weeks.

Expert tips

  1. Candy melts are easy to work with. They melt smoothly and are perfect for coating.
  2. Pretzel knots and pretzel rods are our choice. You could use pretzel nuggets too.
  3. Do not dip chocolate-dipped pretzels in the topping. This will mess up the chocolate coating. Sprinkle the topping.
  4. If you don’t like candy toppings, use toasted and crushed nuts or other crushed candies like peppermint or Halloween candies.
  5. I do not recommend you to freeze these. It loses its texture and goes stale if frozen. It’s best to store chocolate-dipped pretzels at room temperature.

Common questions

What types of chocolate are best to use for dipping pretzels?

Chocolate candy melts are the best option for dipping pretzels. You can use dark chocolate and white chocolate melts for pretzels.  It’s easy to work with melting wafers. You can get smooth melted chocolate that’s apt for dipping and coating.
If Ghirardelli Melting Wafers isn’t available near you, use chocolate chips instead and other melting chocolate. You may want to add a little shortening to help melt chocolate chips or other melting chocolate to help it melt smooth.

Best way to melt chocolate?

Chocolate candy melts are best as it’s convenient and easy to melt. Best melt chocolate candy in a microwave-safe bowl. Use microwave-safe tall glass to melt chocolate for dipping pretzel rods.
Microwave chocolate candy melts for 30-second intervals, and keep stirring after every 30 seconds.
If using chocolate chips for melting consider using ½ teaspoon of coconut oil(or any other shortening)  to help thin down the chocolate.

How to store chocolate pretzels?

It’s best to store dipped pretzels at room temperature in air-tight boxes. Or refrigerate it if it’s too warm and the chocolate coating begins to melt.

Can you freeze it?

I do not recommend you freeze chocolate-covered pretzels. It loses its texture and goes stale if frozen. It’s best to store chocolate-dipped pretzels at room temperature.

Can you use other toppings?

You can use one of these –
Sprinkles (holiday-themed sprinkles or other fancy sprinkles),
Toasted and crushed nuts (almonds, peanuts or pistachios),
Sugar crystals (big crystals of sugar, plain or colored),
Candy (crushed peppermint candy).

Great tips for making them look good as well as taste good. It takes some care and effort to simply sprinkle the decorations on instead of dip the entire treat in the sprinkles!!
