Fry sauce recipe

Ketchup be gone, enter amazing fry sauce. You’ll never dip your French fries in plain old ketchup again. Ordinary fry sauce has just mayonnaise and ketchup, best fry sauce is loaded with more flavors.

This super easy dipping sauce can also be used on hamburgers, sandwiches, and more.

Basic dips for fries is made of mayonnaise and ketchup, that’s all! The best sauce should have more flavors in it. With onion powder, garlic powder, a bit of cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, and pickle brine it’s loaded with amazing flavors.

What is fry sauce

This sauce can be found in most local burger joints in Utah, Idaho, and other parts of Oregon.  It’s a simple condiment served with fries. But you can also use it on hamburgers and sandwiches. This sauce became so popular, it’s now sold in grocery stores.

The best part about the sauce is it’s versatile and easy to customize based on your liking.

Ingredients needed

Here’s what you’ll need-

all ingredients for fry sauce recipe
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dill pickle juice

Mayonnaise – use high-quality creamy mayonnaise. For the vegan option you can use vegan mayonnaise.

Ketchup – for best tasting sauce use regular ketchup not the healthier versions like low sugar ones. The sugar in ketchup balances the tanginess.

Paprika – I prefer smoked paprika for it’s flavor. Feel free to use sweet paprika as well.

Cayenne pepper – adjust amount based on taste preference.

Garlic powder & Onion powder – adds flavor to sauce.

Yellow mustard – regular yellow mustard or Dijon mustard can be used.

Apple cider vinegar – to balance the flavor.

Dill pickle juice – for extra oomph.

How to make fry sauce

Making French fry dipping sauce at home gives you complete control over how to make it. You can make it sweeter or make it with extra heat. Make it thick by increasing the mayonnaise quantity or make it thin by using a 1:1 ratio of mayonnaise and ketchup.

Here’s how I make it –

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, mix well. That’s it!

Serve and enjoy!

Fry sauce variations

  • Make it vegan by substituting regular mayonnaise with vegan mayonnaise.
  • Make the thick consistency dipping sauce by using a 2:1 ratio of mayonnaise to ketchup.
  • Add more heat – you can make this sauce with extra heat by increasing the amount of cayenne pepper or using red pepper flakes, or using hot sauce like sriracha.

How to store

This sauce has a shelf life of a week in the refrigerator. Store the sauce in airtight container inside the refrigerator. Just give it a good stir before serving.

Take the required amount of sauce that you need and finish it off. Avoid storing sauce that is already dipped with fries to avoid cross-contamination.

Also if the sauce is left on the counter for too long, it won’t keep long.

FAQS

Is fry sauce a Utah thing?

This sauce can be found in most local burger joints in Utah, Idaho, and other parts of Oregon.  Original fry sauce was first made in Utah with just 2 ingredients mayonnaise and ketchup. Many customize it for more flavors by adding other ingredients. This sauce became so popular; it’s now sold in grocery stores.

What is fry sauce made of?

Original sauce was first made in Utah with just 2 ingredients mayonnaise and ketchup. Many customize it for more flavors by adding other ingredients.
My version is made of mayonnaise, ketchup, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, yellow mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, apple cider vinegar, and dill pickle juice.

What does fry sauce taste like?

It tastes similar to Thousand island, but it’s not the same. A thousand islands are a chunky sauce that has pickle relish, and chopped onions in it whereas fry sauce is a creamy, smooth sauce.
