Why This Recipe Works

1. Homemade blue cheese dressing is so much better than store-bought dressing. I bet you won’t be buying dressing in the jar anymore once you try it at home.

2. It’s very quick and easy to make at home and uses ingredients easily available.

3. Salad dressing has wonderful balance of flavors that you would love in your salad dressing. Sour cream, buttermilk and lemon juice adds wonderful tangy flavor, whereas mayonnaise and blue cheese gives it cool, creamy and cheesy flavors to the dressing. A hint of sugar adds sweetness.

4. Use the dressing to toss your salad by making it into pourable consistency, or use it as appetizer dip by keeping it thick.

5. Try this dressing with coleslaw instead of regular dressing. You’ll so love it!
This dressing will definitely be a hit, double or triple the batch. This thing flies fast.

6. The dressing stays good for 2 weeks refrigerated. Make ahead and store.

Ingredients Needed For Blue Cheese Dressing

Here’s what you need for the dressing –

  • 6 oz blue cheese (bleu cheese)
  • 1 ½ cup sour cream
  • ½ cup mayonnaise, full fat
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon parsley, fresh
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ cup buttermilk or milk or water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (not seen in photo)

Ingredients Additions And Substitutions

For best tasting dressing use good quality ingredients. I typically buy blue cheese in wedges or block form and then crumbled to size I like. I like Gorgonzola blue cheese.

  • Sour cream and full fat mayonnaise together adds extra creaminess and tang flavor to the dressing.
  • To lighter dressing substitute
  • Sour cream with yogurt
  • Full fat mayonnaise with light mayonnaise.
  • Fresh parsley can be substituted with fresh chives.

You can keep the dressing chunky or creamy. I like it both creamy and chunky, so I reserve little blue cheese and whisk all ingredients together until it’s smooth. Then add crumbled blue cheese on top to make it chunky.

The consistency of this dressing can be adjusted to your preference. To make it thin and pourable add buttermilk and whisk it all together.

How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing?

Crumble blue cheese into a bowl. Whisk to make it creamy. You can keep it as creamy as you like or keep it chunky.

Add rest of the ingredients to the bowl – sour cream, full fat mayonnaise, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper to taste, sugar. Whisk it all together.

To serve as dip – keep it thick.

To serve as dressing – add 2 to 3 tablespoons of buttermilk and whisk it. Adjust the amount of buttermilk to use in the recipe according to get the consistency you prefer.

Transfer fresh the dressing into mason jars covered with lid.

Pro-Tip: the best tasting dressing is the one that has rested for few hours in the fridge. Resting helps blue cheese blend it’s wonderful flavors into the dressing.

Wait before you serve! Rest it!

Store refrigerated for up-to 2 weeks.

How To Serve Blue Cheese Dressing?

It can be served two ways –

  • As salad dressing
  • As a dip

Salad Dressing – make the dressing into pourable consistency. Drizzle it over wedges of iceberg lettuce salad, use this dressing to toss in your coleslaw instead of regular mayonnaise dressing.

Blue cheese dressing is great with any buffalo chicken recipe. Buffalo chicken meatballs, buffalo chicken stuffed zucchini boats, buffalo chicken wings needs a hearty drizzle of the dressing for that extra oomph!

Dip – keep it thick and creamy. Serve with veggie sticks as appetizer – carrot sticks, celery stalks, young snow peas, taste great when dipped in blue cheese dressing.

How Long Will Blue Cheese Dressing Last?

Blue cheese dressing is one of those make ahead dressing recipes which can be made a few days ahead and stored refrigerated.

Store blue cheese dressing in any glass jar covered with lid tight, refrigerate it.  The dressing stays good for up to 2 weeks.
