How to make Halloween pretzels (step-by-step pictorial)

Sharing with you two decoration ideas for Halloween pretzels. You can make them both, or make other variations by using your own creative ideas.

  • Line baking tray with parchment paper (use silicon baking mat).
  • Melt white chocolate with ½ teaspoon coconut oil in microwave. I always use 50% power to melt chocolate in microwave for 30 second intervals. Remove the bowl from microwave stir well. If not fully melted place the bowl back into microwave and continue to melt for 20 seconds more. Continue doing until 90% of chocolate is melted. Remove from microwave and give a good whisk. The heat in the bowl will help melt all chocolate.

PRO-TIP : Often chocolate looks like it’s not melted and it’s common mistake to put it back into microwave to heat more. This might push the chocolate far and it will harden and burn at the bottom. Make sure to keep stirring every 20 to 30 seconds. If melting very little quantity of chocolate, start with 10 seconds and keep stirring frequently. Keep in mind every microwave and their setting is different.  You might want to adjust yours accordingly.

  • Ghost Halloween pretzels: Using a fork, coat mini pretzels in melted white chocolate. Shake excess chocolate from the pretzel coating. Place chocolate covered pretzels on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat this step for the entire bag of mini pretzels.

NOTE : While working on pretzel coating, if chocolate melt hardens, place the bowl back into microwave for 10 to 20 seconds to heat it lightly. Stir well before use. Chocolate will loosen.

  • Let the dipped pretzels set. Then drizzle chocolate over set pretzels (this step for ghost pretzels are optional).

  • Immediately press eye candies over the pretzels. Let is set completely.

  • Mummy Halloween pretzels rods:  Pour melted chocolate into tall glass. Choose the size of glass depending on the length of your pretzel rods. Dip pretzel rod in chocolate melts one at a time. Place it on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Helpful tips

  1. Do not over heat or over melt chocolate. It will harden and burn at the bottom.
  2. Candy melts are best choice over choco chips. It’s easy to work with candy melts and you can store for chocolate covered pretzels for about a week with candy melts.
  3. Use very little coconut or shortening to help melt candies.
  4. Use fresh pretzels if you want to make ahead and store.

FAQS

What kind of chocolate to use?

Candy melts are best as they are easy to use.
If you don’t have access to candy melts, use white chocolate barks chop it, melt with coconut oil and use it in the recipe.

Can I use different colors of chocolate for dipping pretzels?

Yes you can. Candy melts comes in different colors and can be chosen according to celebrations.
For Halloween treats choose white, orange (pumpkin color), green, dark purple.

Chocolate didn’t melt at all? It turned hard, why?

Overheating chocolate even for few seconds will push chocolate far and harden immediately.

Use good quality chocolate that is specifically used for baking i.e that can be melted. You also get candy melts (chocolate discs) that are specifically used for melting on amazon. Candy melts are easy to work with and melts beautifully.

Do not use choco chips melts if you want to store it for long. Choco chips and coconut oil melts will turn chalky.

How to correctly melt chocolate for dipping pretzels?

If using chocolate bark, chop into smaller pieces. Place in microwave safe bowl. For 1 cup chocolate use 1 to 2 teaspoon virgin coconut oil and melt in microwave for 20 seconds interval. Give chocolate a good stir every 20 second interval.
Continue the process until you see few pieces of chocolate left out and most of it has melted. Do not put it back in microwave. Just stir. Residue heat of the bowl will melt chocolate. If chocolate doesn’t get fully melted, place it back in microwave for 10 seconds.

How long can I store Halloween pretzles?

You can store these in air tight containers for about a week. Use fresh pretzels. Use ONLY candy melts without any coconut oil for coating if you want to make these ahead and store.

Is it best to use candy melts or white chocolate? I figured candy melts would be the simplest and that’s what’s listed in the ingredients, but the post references melted chocolate several times so I just wanted to be sure! Thanks!!
