The homemade Italian seasoning recipe is super versatile and easy to customize. It’s a herb seasoning blend that is mostly used in Italian-inspired recipes. You can customize it according to your taste, add more of your favorite herb if you like.
Here’s what I added to my seasoning blend-
- 2 tablespoon dried oregano
- 2 tablespoon dried basil
- 2 tablespoon dried thyme
- 2 tablespoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon marjoram
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
Note: this is my suggestion for quantity of each herb and spice. You can change them based on your preference taste.
- Oregano for bold and earthy flavors with a slight bitterness.
- Basil for mintier taste with hints of aniseed and pepper flavors.
- Thyme for a sharp almost minty flavor. It adds earthy flavors with floral hints and is slightly sweet and slightly peppery.
- Rosemary adds a lemony peppery woody taste.
- Marjoram for a strong scent. This herb is warm, slightly sharp, and a little bitter.
- Parsley for that herbaceous brightness that you need in any dish.
- Sage adds earthy flavors with scents of citrus.
- Garlic powder for additional zest and flavor.
Additional ingredients and substitutions
Red pepper flakes doesn’t come under traditional Italian spice, but you can add pepper flakes for heat.
There is no holding back if you want to make the seasoning more flavor-packed by adding onion powder too along with garlic powder that I included in the recipe.
Another ingredient used by Italian in fennel (fresh). Some like to add crushed dried fennel seeds to their seasoning.
