Preparing morning breakfast can be intimidating sometimes. Not anymore. Because the most amazing French toast sticks are here! With very minimal ingredients you can serve your family a breakfast that is indulgence at it’s best. And it tastes like cinnamon donuts!
Donuts for breakfast… are indulgence 100%! These sticks are as good as donuts but made super quick and easily. Dipped in pure maple syrup, you are guaranteed to get transported to heaven! To have a wholesome breakfast experience, serve these cinnamon sticks with fresh berries and fruits.
If you are a fan of Burger King’s French toast sticks, it’s time to get your favorite breakfast made at home. Use few days old bread for better results. Also keep the batons thick.
Keeping thick sticks is crucial while making French toast sticks. They are stiffer and easy to pick and dip without breaking it.
Homemade version is better-than-burger-king’s-French-toast. We don’t just say it, it’s better for many reasons:
Why Homemade French Toast Sticks Are Better
- There is no thick
batter coating like Burger King’s version. I personally hate that thick batter
coating and do not give me a feel of eating French toast. French Toast ideally
should have light, airy, egg-milk mixture coating and not thick batter coating.
- French toast and cinnamon sugar are best paired
together. You can coat your homemade version with as much cinnamon sugar. You’ll
miss the cinnamon sugar coating in BK’s version.
- You can use any bread of your choice as per your
dietary requirement. Use gluten-free bread and it still tastes good.
- The joy of eating it as soon as it’s out of the pan coated generously in cinnamon sugar is something else! Eat it hot and fresh!
What Is The Best Bread For French Toast Sticks
Texan toast is great choice, you can use any bread of your choice to make French toast sticks. Use wheat bread, gluten free bread, loaf of French bread, white bread any bread that you have in hand! Ideally you need to use 3 to 4 days old bread, so it’s tastes better and stays stiff. Fresh bread would flop.
What You Need For French Toast Sticks Recipe
Here’s what you need to make French toast sticks –
- Few days old bread loaf(I used white bread, you can use any type of bread)
- Eggs
- Milk
- Pinch of salt
- Butter
- Caster Sugar
- Cinnamon Powder
- And pure maple syrup to serve
How To Make French Toast Sticks
Cut bread loaf into equal sized thick strips.
Trim off the crust on the edges. I prefer to trim the crust due to it’s mild bitter taste plus it gives neater batons without the crust. If you don’t mind the crust, leave them on.
Cut each slice into 2(or 3) equal sized thick sticks. Set aside.
In a bowl, crack 2 whole eggs. Pour in milk and add a pinch of salt.
Whisk together until combined.
In another plate mix together caster sugar and cinnamon powder. Set aside.
Melt 2 tablespoon of butter in a skillet.
Quickly roll bread sticks in egg mixture, do not soak the bread in egg mixture even for seconds. Roll, shake off excess egg mixture and place it on hot skillet.
Cook’s-Tip: You need to move quick and make sure you do not soak the bread in egg mixture. You need to move fast while rolling all side in egg mixture and shake off excess.
Using few days old bread is crucial at this stage. Fresh bread will soak up egg-milk mix and will flop.
Cook on medium low flame, flipping the bread sticks on all sides until golden brown.
Once bread sticks are golden brown remove from pan and coat with cinnamon sugar.
Pro-Tip: Cinnamon sugar will stick to the French toast sticks only if it’s hot. Transfer hot cinnamon French toast sticks from pan to cinnamon sugar plate quickly. Coat on all sides.
Repeat the process for all the sticks.
Serve immediately hot with maple syrup served on side for dipping or drench the cinnamon fresh toast sticks in maple syrup drizzle. Serve with fresh berries for complete breakfast experience.
Can I Freeze French Toast Sticks
Yes you absolutely can. While personally I love to make a batch enough to eat it the day it’s made, you can make big batch and have it frozen for another morning. You’ll need to tweak this recipe a little.
I wasn’t planning on freezing a batch, I used milk in egg mixture that is used to coat the bread. Using heavy cream instead of milk will help you freeze these sticks better. So it’s doesn’t taste dried when reheated.
Replace milk with heavy cream in the recipe. Follow rest of the recipe. Make French toast sticks. Allow it to cool completely(for freezing purpose, skip cinnamon sugar coating). Then move these into gallon sized freezer friendly zip-lock bags. You can keep them frozen for about a month or month and a half.
Roll it in cinnamon sugar just before serving only. You can freeze the ones coated in sugar.
How To Cook Frozen French Toast Sticks
Simple! Just pull out as many you want and reheat in oven or skillet at a time. Make sure you add little butter to baking tray or to your skillet in which you reheat. This will prevent the sticks from turning dry.
Soon as it’s heated, roll in cinnamon sugar and serve with maple syrup and fresh berries.
Tips To Make The Best French Toast Sticks
- Use staple bread loaf. Fresh bread will soak up egg-milk mixture and turn soggy. Your bread sticks will flop.
- Keep thick batons or slices of bread sticks. It makes it easy to handle while cooking and easy to eat with hands without breaking.
- Move fast while rolling bread sticks in egg mixture. Ensure to shake off excess.
- Soon as bread sticks of rolled in egg mixture, place it on skillet to start cooking. Leaving it aside for even few seconds will turn the bread sticks soggy and it’ll break when you try to pick them up.
- Cook on medium low flame. Egg-milk coating will make the exterior of the bread stick turn brown very quickly. You want it to be uniformly golden brown on all side.
- Cinnamon sugar will stick to the French toast sticks only if it’s hot. Transfer hot cinnamon French toast sticks from pan to cinnamon sugar plate quickly.
