    About egg bake recipe

    1. Super simple and easy to make recipe.

    2. Versatile breakfast dish to which you can add toppings like bacon, spinach, sautéed mushrooms, crumbled feta cheese.

    3. Bake eggs the way you like it – gooey runny yolk, soft cooked yolk or well cooked eggs.

    4. Make your own homemade marinara sauce in less than 30 minutes or use store bought to cut down on prep time.

    5. These Italian baked eggs are very similar to Shakshuoka preparation – the most popular Middle Eastern and North African dish. Marinara sauce used as the base distinguishes Italian eggs from Shakshouka.

    6. No matter what toppings you add to your eggs recipes, bread for mopping into runny yolk eggs is mandatory! Best enjoyed with toasted bread.

    7. A fit breakfast dish to feed a crowd or simply for one person.

    Ingredients needed

    Here’s what you’ll need-

all ingredients for baked eggs on board
    • 1 cup marinara sauce
    • 5-8 eggs
    • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
    • ¼ cup Mozzarella cheese
    • Salt & pepper to taste
    • Basil leaves

    Ingredients additions & substitutions

    Substitutions

Marinara sauce is the base in this recipe. You can substitute marinara sauce with any other toppings of vegetables.

You can substitute any chopped and sautéed vegetables like squash or roasted brussles sprouts, sautéed mushrooms & spinach, with sausages, hash brown, potatoes, bacon or ham.

Substitute parmesan, mozzarella cheese with crumbled feta cheese, goat cheese or even cheddar cheese.

    Additions

To make veggie baked eggs try adding zucchini, eggplants (roasted) or even fennel.

Adding white baked beans gives a wonderful twist to breakfast eggs. Note white baked beans isn’t same as the regular baked beans.

Add canned beans and corn to marinara sauce to give a Mexican twist.

    How to bake eggs?

To make marinara sauce follow this simple recipe.

You can bake eggs in oven-safe skillet or baking pan for a crowd or make single serving eggs by using small ramekins or smaller baking dish.

    For a crowd-

    1. Grease baking dish with cooking oil. Add 1 cup (or more) homemade marinara sauce or use store bought sauce.
    2. Spread the sauce.
    3. Crack 5 to 8 eggs into the pan depending on number of people you want to feed (2 eggs per person is best).
    4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    5. Generously sprinkle fresh grated Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese.
    6. Bake in pre-heated oven at 400F for 8 to 15 minutes or until set as desired (egg whites should be cooked and set i.e it’s still slightly raw and yolk is runny).
    7. For about 9-10 minutes if you want to have runny eggs.
    8. For about 15 minutes if you prefer soft sticky eggs.
    9. Bake for ~18 minutes if you prefer well cooked eggs.
    10. Remove the pan from oven and let it rest for 3 minutes.
    11. Sprinkle with fresh shredded(or chopped) basil leaves and serve hot with toasted bread on the side.
    12. No matter what toppings you add to your eggs recipes, bread for mopping into runny yolk eggs is mandatory!

    Single serving baked eggs-

    1. Grease ramekin or small baking dish with oil. Ramekin I used was super tiny that could fit only one egg, highly recommend to use 2 eggs for 1 serving.
    2. Add 2 to 3 tablespoon homemade marinara sauce. Spread it.
    3. Crack one egg if ramekin is small or 2 eggs if the baking dish is a bit bigger.
    4. Season with salt and pepper.
    5. Generously sprinkle Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese.
    6. Bake in pre-heated oven at 400F for 6 to 10 minutes or until set as desired.
    7. Remove the pan from oven and let it rest for 3 minutes.
    8. Sprinkle with fresh shredded (or chopped) basil leaves and serve hot with toasted bread on the side.

    How long to bake eggs?

The key to best baked eggs is to get runny yolk but the egg whites are just set and not jelly type i.e whites are still slightly raw.

Note baking time will widely vary depending on the size of baking pan used.  For a serving of 4 with 8 eggs –

    • For about 9-10 minutes if you want to have runny eggs.
    • For about 15 minutes if you prefer soft sticky eggs.
    • Bake about 18 minutes if you prefer well cooked eggs.

    FAQS

What can I add to egg bake recipe?

You can add almost any topping of your choice. Anything that can be added to make omelette can be added to egg bake recipe.
    Some suggestions:
Add sautéed bell peppers and onions
    Sautéed mushrooms and spinach
    Crispy cooked bacon crumbs
    Roasted egg plants
    Hash browns
    Sweet potatoes
Regular potatoes sautéed in olive with spices and seasoning
… and the list goes on

Will any size baking dish work for this recipe?

While you can use any size or shaped dish for baking eggs, please use your best judgement in terms of the amount of marinara sauce or the number of eggs to add in the dish.
If the baking dish is too small, there are chances of over flowing when you bake.
Depending on the size of baking dish, baking time will have to be adjusted so you don’t end up with over cooked yolks.

How to say egg white is cooked through?

The key to best baked eggs is to get runny yolk but the egg whites are just set and cooked and not jelly type i.e whites are still slightly raw.
Approximate time for cooking eggs in ramekin with runny yolk will be 10 minutes. Check on egg whites, if it’s just set you can remove it from oven.  Note – whites will be still slightly raw.
If you continue to cook for egg whites to set fully, you will over-cook eggs and yolk will no longer be runny.

You can bake it at 375 degree Fahrenheit. Please note the time to bake egg will vary depending on how you like your eggs to be cooked, runny yolk, sticky and soft cooked eggs or well baked eggs! Adjust time accordingly

I wish I had woken up to this today! My go to herb would be thyme – it literally grows under the snow in my yard! So it nice to always have it. This would be super easy to serve to a crowd too as long as you have enough ramekins! Some nice crusty bread and a breakfast salad. Yum!!

I love how these are individualized to decide how to cook the yolks. I know most people love a runny yolk but I like my eggs cooked all the way through. These are a terrific breakfast solution!

I am not a big fan of breakfast at bed, but I love dinner at bed 😉
I love eggs and can have 4-5 a day, but I don’t. I eat eggs at breakfast for most of my days at work. Thanks for the recipe Jyo, it looks quiet easy to be done!
