Flavoring Agents: We said this recipe is completely versatile. You have control on what flavors you want to add to the dish. Whatever you add, do not skip garlic. Garlic fragrant in the peppers makes this dish pleasingly delicious!

Red chili flakes adds heat balancing the sweetness from the bell peppers. Adjust the quantity if chili flakes depending on your spice preference. If you don’t want to make it spicy, skip adding chili flakes.

Herbs: Use any herb of your choice. You can use mixed Italian herbs, dried basil or dried oregano, dried thyme.

Seasoning: Use flake sea salt with fresh crushed peppers to taste.

Olive Oil: Using good quality olive oil makes for the taste of the dish.

Red Wine Vinegar: A dash of good quality wine vinegar enhances the flavor and taste of the dish.

How To Saute Peppers And Onions?

  1. Slice onions thin.

2. Slice bell peppers into thin strips. Try to slice uniformly sized strips.

3. In a non-stick pan heat olive oil. If using cast iron pan use little extra oil to keep them from burning.

Once oil is hot add thin sliced peppers, onions, dried Italian seasoning, salt and pepper to taste.

Cook’s Tip: I like to dump everything at once and cook until together. Onions and peppers caramelize at the same time. It takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes to cook everything until vegetables are softened and caramelized.

Alternatively you can first caramelize sliced onions for 8 to 9 minutes and then add in peppers and cook to caramelize. It will take about 12 to 14 minutes for peppers to caramelize and soften.

Begin to cook and on medium flame and saute it at regular intervals.

Pro’s Tip: Do not over crowd the pan white you saute peppers. Leave room for space to help move around the sliced peppers white you saute them.

Do in multiple batches if you have to saute the peppers.

4. Once bell peppers begin to soften, add in minced garlic, red wine vinegar and continue to cook for  couple of more minutes on low flame.

5. Once vegetables are tender enough, turn off flame.

Serve hot with fajitas, use it to stuff quesadillas, use it with toasted bread, with grilled chicken. You can use this dish with any meal of your choice.

How Long To Saute Peppers?

Time for peppers to cook will depend on the size of peppers you slice. Try to keep all slices of same size, to help cook peppers evenly.

Note: DO NOT over crowd the pan with peppers. Leave room for moving around to help cook evenly and perfectly.

On a medium flame, sliced peppers will take about roughly 20 minutes to cook perfectly. You want to cook peppers until they are softened and caramelized. Do not burn or blacken the peppers while cooking.

If using cast iron pan, you may want to increase the amount of olive oil added to the pan to prevent it from burning.

During cooking at any time, if peppers begin to burn or stick to the pan and burn, reduce heat and cook on low flame and saute it to prevent it from sticking to the pan.

This is such a delicious side to any meal. I absolutely love it. I make something similar with peppers and onions but I never used red wine vinegar. I must give this recipe a try.

My hubby is crazy over peppers like this, and I make them regularly with sausages and whatever is in the fridge. I’ve never tried putting Italian herbs in the recipe, and I’m going to try that! I bet it makes it taste like a whole different thing..

We eat a ton of peppers and onion in our house, and sautéing them like this is a great way to switch things up. These would go great with some Italian sausage or even bbq chicken.
