A cool refreshing strawberry lemonade. Bring it on, Summer!
Come summer we would all line up in front of a hand cart that held these gorgeous translucent green bottles, with thick spouts, full of fizzy soda that’s held in check by the green marbles (golis). It was our lemonade those days. It was out thirst quencher. If you are from Tamil Nadu you would have spotted a political leader make an enthralling speech, a supporter would run to the stage with a goli soda, pop it open with his forefinger inside the bottle touching the marble and the other hand to put pressure on the fore finger to pop the marble and open the goli soda. The leader would take a sip of soda and continue his enthralling speech. Seen that?
As kids we would be very fascinated by these dark green thick bottles that held a green marble in it’s neck. Popping the marble which is the most important component that holds the fizz was fun to watch. And mom would always tell “be careful, hold the bottle tight, don’t drop it” 😀 Every time I bring the bottle to the mouth, the marble tingles against the bottle making a funny sound. Sometimes the seller would squeeze in half lime into the goli soda after popping to make it more tasty and refreshing. And then there are some flavored/colored goli soda that started becoming popular. And all of that cost us 1 rupee 70 paise.
The giant soda competitors have crushed the ‘goli soda’ company and it’s very rare to spot a hand cart carrying these goli sodas. And it’s equally rare to spot a kid drinking goli soda. It would be safe to say this, “would you be ok in your child drinking this goli soda?” “Would you consider it hygienic?” Of course not! Right. No matter what it is, goli soda is and will remain one of the favorite drink for most of us, the 80’s and 90’s people. And goli soda makes me nostalgic.
We make 100 varieties of lemonade and strawberry lemonade is one such drink that is perfect for summer. In summer, the sweltering heat, which will leave you parched, you are going to be drinking a whole lot of fluids. And while taking in fluids, do not forget to add nutrients with fruits, vegetables or grains.
15 number strawberries
Juice of 1 lime
½ inch ginger
Chilled water as required(about 1 cup)
Ice cubes – few
For sugar syrup-
Sugar – 1/2 cup
Water – 1/2 cup
- To make sugar syrup, mix sugar and water to gather and bring it to boil. Keep stirring until sugar is completely dissolved. I prefer to make sugar syrup with 1 string consistency. You can skip it if you are pressed of time. Just ensure sugar and water boils and all sugar gets dissolved. Let the syrup cool down completely before using.
- Wash and hull the strawberries. Cut each into small pieces.
- In a blender add cut strawberries, sugar syrup(I added 3 tablespoons), grated ginger and lime juice and blend until all the pieces of strawberries are broken down.
- Pour into serving glasses, add few ice cubes. Garnish with lemon slices and serve immediately.
